As someone who is an atheist but was never a JW I find the vehemence of some of the believer/atheist debates a bit startling. While I feel strongly motivated to show the WBTS is WRONG, I do not feel the same way about Christians or Muslims or Buddhists (but if faced with a Mormon or a Scientologist may feel the need to have a go at them for shunning etc.) I feel that if someone has a belief which is not harmful to them or others and it makes them feel good, then who am I to judge. But that doesn't stop me from putting forward my opinions.

Question for those who no longer believe the bible is from GOD
by confusedandalone indo you ever get to the point that you almost can not handle the sight of a thread where someone is trying to justify bible gods deplorable actions?
i must admit i have actually gotten angry over this and it makes me feel awful at times.
for instance someone who acknowledges spending hours studying the bible and cross referencing etc... and they still find a way to acknowledge that the supreme god has somehow asked for this to be written and recorded.. then those that say well i don't believe the entire bible just the parts that sound nice and that i am not ashamed to attribute to the guy i want to cuddle me at night.

"Finally she added that any religion that puts down or attacks other religions to make themselves look good is usually insecure or hiding something." - excellent point - I have poionted out to my wife many times how they tear others down (unfairly) to build themselves up and that if it really was the Truth they wouldn't need to do this!

Sex really that bad?
by Batman89 ini was just thinking randomly.
why/how are sexual desires really that much of a sin??.
sexual energy is one of the highest forms of energies known, why would god put this strong desire in us only to have us repress it through his"word the bible"??.

In traditional societies the strictness of control over sexual promiscuity was directed related to the arability (fertility) of the land. Where land was scarce or less fertile, it was critical that the line of inheritance be clear to prevent disputes - hence the reason Islamic law is so restrictive as it developed in the deserts of Saudi Arabia. In socieites where land was more productive and available, such as Northern Europe, attitudes to sexual promiscuity were more relaxed. That is also why attitudes to sex are more relaxed in urban societies as compared with rural societies. The WBTS has inherited its attitudes from the ancient Jews of the Old Testament who lived in the semi-arid land of the Middle East and who were obsessed with the family line.

"Why Do Many Male Jehovah Witnesses Who Learn TTATT Grow Beards"?
by ÁrbolesdeArabia inthe year once 1983 and the brother who use to study the bible with me drove by and had a full on "charles manson" looking facial hair and beard.
i asked tina, a friend what's up with him?
tina was 19 and a hot red-head woman who was partially in the religion but had problems with fornication.

I bet most men on JWN have facial hair as a mark of rebellion. I counted 24 on this thread so far and I make 25 (though I am not an exJW I do maintain my beard in the face of an active campaign by my Witness wife to get me to shave it off - so it still counts as an act of rebellion against the WBTS). Come on all you hirsute apostates - stand up and be counted!

I loved the line: "I haven't given birth to an apostate have I?" How did that make you feel? A classic cult mother guilt trip there. I think the response would have been either to have said: "Well you couldn't have given birth to an apostate as at the time I wasn't able to form a conscious thought, let alone get baptized and then realize that what I had been baptized into didn't make any sense." or alternatively you could have asked her: "and how do you feel about the thought that your son may be an apostate?" to see how she reacted.
I agree with Kate that you need to thread carefully with your Mum. You are still her son. You may want to sound her out by explaining to her that you are trying to work out who you are and what you believe and that you have questions and she should respect that. Tell her that you are not sure whether there is only one Truth, namely ther Truth according the WBTS and so you are asking questions and you need her help in finding the answers to your questions. See how she responds. It may be that she ends up with the cult response of "accept the Truth or I will shun you" but at least give her the benefit of the doubt for the time being and see what happens. She may surprise you.
Good luck Fraz

What usually happens after the memorial?
by Frazzled UBM indo members of the congregation usually have a meal together after the memorial?
does the fact that my wife has decided not to travel across town to her filipino congregation and is going to the local one instead and wants to be picked up when it finishes at 8 pm mean that she hasn't been invited to a meal with her filipino congregation and that she is being socially excluded by them?
i think this is good news but i don't want her to get caught up with the local congregatin because i don't want them coming around to pressure her to attend when she is irregular.

Thanks for comments everyone - it seems it is because it is only an hour and so she doesn't want to travel an hour and a half each way for a one hour meeting. The start time would have been 7 pm at the Filipino congregation, which would have meant I would have had to go home early, so that seems to have factored into her thinking. I was a bit surprised though with her going to the local one, as I figure her main motivation for going is social and so it doesn't make sense if she doesn't know anyone. But maybe the ritual is important in itself.

I think this is good news but I don't want her to get caught up with the local congregatin because I don't want them coming around to pressure her to attend when she is irregular. If she is thinking aboutr fading I see it is useful for her to be affiliated with two congregations a long way apart so if she doesn't turn up at one they might think she is attending the other provided she doesn't make a clear switch such that the local congregation counts her as one of theirs and keeps track of her attendance.

Reverse Witnessing - Will NEVER work!
by MissConfused inits been a while since i spoke up.
after a lot of 'tactful' questioning, i have come under the conclusion that witnessing ttatt with dubs will never work.
there is nothing called reasoning with them.

It is extremely hard work unless something happens to crack shell of cognitive dissonance. If they have started to have doubts there may be a door, otherwise you are banging your head against a brick wall. It is very frustrating if you think you can use logic to overturn the belief system and then realise they are just not listening to you.
